As we move into autumn and winter here are a number of seasonal reminders and updates:

Barn Update
Ian continues to make great progress on the Barn, and with the generous donations to our JustGiving appeal, we have now reached our £3,500 target and can get going on the next phase of fitting out the interior.  Ian is looking for volunteers to help with painting, insulating and boarding (working within covid safety restrictions).  If you can help please contact Ian. The photos here show how the Barn is already being put to good use – Eugene and Colin busy turning apples from the site into our very own Shepherds Hill cider.

Bonfires
The Council permits tenants to have bonfires between October 1st and March 31st.  Please make sure you follow the Haringey ‘Bonfire Guidance’ (available to read in full on the SHA website):

  • Keep fires to a minimum and only light when they cause no nuisance to neighbours. If possible check and coordinate with your neighbours so you’re not all having fires at the same time.
  • Burn dry material only. NEVER burn synthetic materials such as plastics and rubber or treated and painted wood.
  • Always check the direction of the wind to ensure it is taking the smoke away from neighbouring residences.
  • Do not light a bonfire within one hour of sunset or leave alight later than one hour after sunset. Climatic conditions at these times may increase the smoke problem.
  • A bonfire should never be left unattended; make sure that when leaving the plot the fire is completely extinguished.
Site inspection
In anticipation of a spring inspection by the Council, now is the time to get your plot prepared and in order. Do let us know if for any reason you are struggling or unable to work your plot.  Also, particularly if you have a plot larger than 5 poles, please have a think about the amount of work you can sensibly put in, and remember the option of halving larger plots. We have over 100 people on our waiting list, demand far exceeding supply.  And don’t forget that if you are considering reducing or giving up your plot, you need to give notice before December 1st to avoid being charged rent for 2021.

Trading Shed
A reminder that whilst we are operating under covid restrictions, the trading shed is open only for one hour from 11–12 every Sunday until the end of October. From then on it will open for an hour 11-12 fortnightly until Potato day which we hope to hold on 4th February 2021.  Trading Shed opening dates are on the website.

Annual General Meeting: Advance Notice
We plan to hold our AGM this year on Zoom, some time before the end of November.  The date will be confirmed in our next newsletter.  The committee needs new members and we very much hope some of you will consider standing.  If you are interested in becoming more involved in the life of the allotment community and would like to find out more about what being a committee member involves please contact us on info@shepherdshillallotments.co.uk

Yours
Julie, Annie, Trevor, Juliet, Gary, Jill, Ian, and Nick (co-opted - Treasurer).
